Exclusive Interview with Artist Emma Hedman

Emma Hedman is a new, up-and-coming artist who does incredibly detailed, vibrant body art on Instagram (IG: @newbiemakeup). In less than a year she has gained over 10k followers and it is growing quickly. She is a 28 year-old health coach and personal trainer from Stockholm, Sweden. Now that she is done with her maternity leave, she is dedicated to doing newbiemakeup full time, and has exciting plans in store for it.

I go the chance to interview Emma about her artistic style, background, and inspirations. Check out what Emma had to say!

How would you describe your art?

Oh, I have so many different styles I think, but with that said I'd say that it is bold, unpredictable and colorful, haha.

Can you tell me about how you started doing this? When did you start?

I began in April last year. I had found Mykie (Instagram: @mykie_) online and she mentioned something about a challenge called #100daysofmakeup. So I created the newbiemakeup account and started to play around with makeup.

Where do you get inspiration for your work?

I would say nature and colors, and of course other artists. I rarely plan looks; they just "happen" when I start painting, so I guess I pick up and store inspiration from all kinds of things.

How long does it typically take you to create a look?

Well, up until now I would say they usually take about 2-3 hours to do, but since I started doing this full-time I have this rare opportunity to work for 4-5 hours with my looks, so hopefully I'll be able to do more advanced looks now.

What is your favorite part of doing body art compared to other artwork?

Well, I love working on skin! That it is warm and uneven; it makes such a pleasant canvas.

You have a range of doing very effeminate make up to very gothic and dark. Why do you like to do both? Do you have a preference for one style over the other?

No, I like them all, I couldn't choose just one. They all represent a part of me.

What do you hope that people feel when they see your art?

I hope that people get inspired, feel happy or encouraged, or mind blown of course.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell people? Advice about following art, your passions?

Well, I haven't done this long but I've learned that art can be a very important outlet, and that exercising your passion everyday is one of the best ways to learn and grow as an artist.
